Learn how to control your body language

body language

Our bodies involuntarily reveal a lot about how we feel, especially at a job interview.

From the moment we walk through the door, rightly or wrongly, we’re being sized up.

So, if you’re hoping to land one of the top roles on jobs24.com, what can you do to make sure you’re giving out all the right signals?

It’s easy with our four-step plan.

Pleased to meet you

Never be overpowered or overpowering, be firm but don’t squeeze or linger. And never ever be tempted to fist pump!

Sit up straight and don’t fidget

Slouching or sitting cross-legged suggests you’re here for a coffee and a catch-up. Fidgeting nervously with your watchstrap makes you look like you’re late for another appointment.

You’re actually here to secure a new role so sit up straight and let your calm posture relay one message: I’m here to do business and I’m serious about getting this job.

Look into my eyes

From first dates to first interviews, holding eye contact is incredibly important, although eyelash fluttering is not recommended in the latter. Glancing at your scuffed shoes (oh, how did you miss that!?) or staring wide-eyed at the picture of your interviewer’s family, just makes you look bored or terrified.

Smile like you mean it

Smiling will automatically make you feel instantly more relaxed. It also allows your interviewer to see you can be happy and composed, even in what’s usually considered to be a stressful situation – a great skill to have.

Do, however, practice the art of smiling. You want to look naturally at ease, not grinning at your own secret joke.

Now put this into practice by applying for roles with jobs24.com .
