Balfour Beatty have a fantastic opportunity for a 4D Planner to join our Major Projects team, this role will be based at Canary Wharf, London.

Our Major Projects business delivers large-scale, innovative, and complex infrastructure projects which keep the UK moving and the economy thriving. We operate within three principal markets; Transportation; Energy and Power, and Major Infrastructure.

As a 4D Planner you will be responsible for developing and implementing 4D models, integrating time and scheduling dimensions with 3D design. Aims to enhance project visualization, coordination, and communication by incorporating the fourth dimension of time.

The 4D Planner's scope involves utilizing advanced planning and modelling tools, collaborating with project teams, and contributing to the successful and timely execution of construction projects through comprehensive visualisation strategies

What you'll be doing

Under supervision of a 4D Planning / Planning Lead, contribute to:

  • Identifying planning scope, major constraints, and contract requirements alongside identifying major quantities and factors affecting the programme;

  • Use 3D/4D planning software proficiently, working individually or as part of a team to integrate inputs and produce high-standard outcomes for the project;

  • Integrate 3D models, understand spatial arrangements, and efficiently navigate software;

  • Manage the file system, incorporating 3D models, objects, labels, legends, and metadata as required;

  • Validate program sequences with 4D software, linking activities with 3D objects in an ordered and structured manner, displaying durations and appearance types to satisfy twin model requirements;

  • Modify the program to include necessary details for animation purposes, and monitor, gather, and incorporate accurate progress information into visual planning reports for periodic updates;

  • Manage 4D and video files, outcomes and produce, distribute, validate, and modify to final version high standard professional animation presentations for the benefit of the project;

  • Ensuring the 4D outcome is functionally compliant with BIM requirements, business management systems and project planning procedures;

  • Produce very detailed high-quality animations to facilitate description of complex methodologies and processes in a visual way to inform punctually or use commercially, e.g., tenders or client presentations. Use of the required 4D animation production and rendering software.

    Knowledge:

  • Understanding of project management tools and software (like Excel, MS Project, Primavera P6 or ASTA) commonly used in the industry, as these are integral to creating and managing project schedules;

  • Competent in 3D and spatial representation: able to produce basic 3D models with modelling software like Sketch Up, CAD, Revit, etc.

  • 4D planning, able to integrate 3D models with programmes (time), creating a project digital twin. Able to produce periodic project reporting in 4D enhancing communication of the plan. User of 4D software: Synchro, Furzor, Navisworks, etc.

  • Able to produce basic animations to facilitate explanation of complex methodologies and processes for bespoke internal or commercial use. Able to integrate 4D outcomes with video editing tools to produce high standard presentations;


  • Experience:
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and managing projects using planning software like P6/Asta;

  • Involvement in collaborative projects, where teamwork and communication skills were exercised;

  • Practical experience in using 3D modelling, Planning and 4D Planning;

  • Experience in construction or other sectors with transferable skills that align with the demands of the construction field.
