As a result of growing demands for our award-winning range of combustion engines and realising our goal "constructing our road to zero". We are seeking a Principal Engineer. The role will suit an individual looking for an opportunity to develop their career within a fast-paced organisation at the cutting edge of engine design and development.

You will be part of our Architecture and Design Team supporting Global Diesel and alternative fuel ICE platforms (including Hydrogen). The Architecture and Design Team are responsible for the delivery of a multitude of new and conventional ICE designs from concept to flawless launch.

About your role

Working within a dynamic engineering-focused team, you will be accountable for the end-to-end engineering activities (development, delivery, and launch) relating to in production support of our current diesel engine products. You will lead a team responsible for multiple engine systems, completing all problem counter measure activities and feeding this learning into the concepts for new product.

You will need to support and liaise with internal and external stakeholders, plan and control the systems project progress, manage the resource within your team, offer technical guidance and direction, provide mentorship and leadership, contribute to process development and the overall direction of the team. You will report directly into the Architecture Team leader.

Responsibilities:

Planning and Organisation

  • Creating, maintaining and delivering the project plan for your system based on cascaded targets and allocated resource.


  • Coordinate and liaise with key stakeholders in cross functional team collaboration (e.g. programme, purchasing, supplier) driving seamless project delivery.


  • Support programme gateway reviews with technical evidence and cost status.


  • Provide effective and timely escalation/status report through clear communication to senior management.


  • Provide support to other design workstreams throughout the global JCB design team.


  • Research and Development
  • Keep on track of the state-of-the-art technical development relating to the engine platform.


  • Understand the effectiveness and importance of relevant benchmarking.


  • Create clean sheet concept designs from first principles.


  • Plan and execute POC (Proof-of-Concept) assessment either through test campaign and/or first principle analysis and simulation.

    This role is open to candidates with >10 years relevant experience, who demonstrate a level of knowledge allowing autonomy in their role. Ideally, we are looking for candidates who can apply their experience and knowledge to new and existing concepts, using engineering first principles to understand problems and provide robust, validated engineering solutions whilst providing a level of mentorship to the less experienced members of the team. Principal Engineers within the team should be able to "lead by example", promoting professionalism and best practice across the wider business and our suppliers.


  • In addition to a passion for engineering, experience of delivery, and a desire to be 'hands-on' with projects from concept to completion, the candidates will:
  • Have a degree in an associated mechanical engineering discipline, with a sound understanding of Mechanical Engineering principles (showing an attention to detail, and being data driven).


  • Be an expert in CAD, (Siemens nx) or similar CAD system.


  • Have had been involved in multiple engine design programs in a Lead Engineer role from concept to production.


  • Be experienced in design of a variety of engines including medium duty diesel.


  • Have excellent people skills and experience of leading teams.


  • Be proficient in design and calculations of base engine components such as, Crank shafts, (balancing), Camshaft design, Bearing sizing, Bolted joints, Gasket loads, Valvetrain dynamics, Belt drive system sizing, and general tolerance stacks.


  • Have excellent communication skills and experience of presenting and producing technical documentation.


  • Have a good grasp of analysis, FEA, CFD and combustion simulation packages in terms of working with the team to understand, iterate and improve designs.


  • You will be proficient in detailing and applying GD&T with the ability to check designs and complex drawings.


  • Experienced supplier interactions and management, with good commercial awareness.


  • Be able to work well under pressure and to meet deadlines.
